Club History

Mtibwa Sugar Sports Club which is located in Mvomero district about 100 kms from Morogoro region, was formed in 1988 by a group of workers of Mtibwa Sugar Estates Ltd who decided to form a football team which will take part in league competitions in district level. The team started playing in 4th division league in 1989 and steadily climbed up the ladder of success which saw the team finally getting a promotion to first division league in 1996. The league was restructured in 1998 and became Premier League Division.
Mtibwa Sugar which is currently coached by former national team player and coach, the legendary Abdallah Kibaden ‘King’, reigns second in the ongoing premier league with 23 points, one point behind the leaders Tanzania Prisons FC.

Mtibwa Sugar is one of the very few clubs in the country which enjoys consistent harmony and stability. Unlike most other premier league clubs, Mtibwa Sugar has very sound, visionary and transparent leadership which ensures the team always reaches heights of success.

Our vision is to be the strongest and most successful team in the East and Central Africa region and the continent as a whole. Our mission is to ensure our team gets comprehensive training and advanced coaching tactics and techniques to enable the team achieve our vision. Likewise we aim at scouting talented youth players and train them to achieve highest peak of performance with emphasis always being on self and team discipline.

Team Success

Since privatization of Mtibwa Sugar Estates Limited in late 1998, the club has achieved remarkable results and has earned a reputation of an emerging giant. Playing under the new management, the team managed to become the only third team from upcountry to lift the national championship trophy in 1999 and in the following season managed to become the first and todate the only upcountry club to win the national championship in two consecutive seasons.

   2004 – Winners beating Simba 1-0 in D’Salaam

9:Mapinduzi Cup

   2005 – Finalists losing 2-1 to Yanga in Zanzibar
   2007 – finalists losing 5-4 on penalty shoot out to Simba in Zanzibar

Regional and International Participation

CECAFA Kagame Tournament

   2000

Qualified and participated for the first time in the tournament
held in Rwanda, was eliminated in group stage.

   2001

Qualified to participate in the tournament held in Kenya but
could not Participate due to FIFA suspension on Tanzania.

   2005

Qualified and participated in the tournament held in Mwanza,
Tanzania; emerged fourth.

CAF Continental Championship

   2000

Qualified and played in the Continental Tournament (CAF CUP)
for the first Time in club history. Mtibwa was eliminated in the second round by Cotton Sport of Cameroon. Mtibwa ousted Mochudi FC of Botswana in the first Round.

   2001

Qualified and played in the CAF cup, was eliminated in the first
round by EELPA of Ethiopia on an away goal advantage.

   2002

Qualified and participated in the first edition of Confederations Cup, was Eliminated in the 2nd round by Santos FC of South Africa having failed to travel for return fixture in Capetown. Mtibwa eliminated Chemelil Sugar of Kenya in the1st round.

   2004

Qualified and participated in the first edition of Confederations
Cup, was Eliminated in the 2nd round by Santos FC of South Africa having failed to travel for return fixture in Capetown. Mtibwa eliminated Chemelil Sugar of Kenya in the1st round.

   2005

Qualified to play in the 2nd Edition of Confederation Cup but
could not Participate due to CAF Suspension after failing to make to Cameroon to play against Cotton sports

Players in the National Team:

The captain of Mtibwa Sugar, Mecky Maxime, has also been the captain of senior national team (Taifa Stars) for the past five years and the longest serving player in the national team until September 2007 when he resigned from playing for the National Team after serving the same for seven years.

   Foreign Players
Mtibwa Sugar has only one foreign player, namely Evans Omondi, a goalkeeper from Kenya.

Disciplinary Honours Not only is Mtibwa Sugar one of the strongest sides in the premier league but it is a highly disciplined team as well. The high degree of discipline and true sportsmanship spirit displayed by Mtibwa Sugar in and out of the field of play has earned the team the title of Most Disciplined Team in the premier league division for two consecutive seasons; 2005 and 2006.
